چکیده

This paper emphasises on the implementation of the flow control and resource allocation mechanisms of the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer of GPRS. Also, its design for adaptability to the satellite network has been considered. In addition, the two systems have been compared in terms of transmission-time, for different data sizes. The results obtained show a lot of promise for satellite based Personal Communication Services (PCS) applications, especially the dual mode phone technology (which supports both the Cellular & Satellite service modes), leading to Geo-Mobile Satellite Systems (GMSS). GMSS has the potential of providing an affordable, compact, low power, high quality, and attractive solution for the rapidly growing mobile satellite services community.

The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Phase 2+ standard specifies a type of packet data service called General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). GPRS allows dynamic allocation of bandwidth resources. Wireless channels are allocated to a Mobile Station based on its demand. A communication session may last for an extended period of time with intermittent packet transmissions. This paper in...

Performance Analysis of RLC/MAC Protocol in General Packet Radio Service

We analyze the throughput and delay performance of the radio link control/media access control (RLC/MAC) protocol layers in General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks. Several time-slotted uplink radio frequency channels are shared by the mobiles on a request reservation based multiple access scheme. Using the theory of Markov chains, we derive expressions for the uplink throughput and delay ...

General Packet Radio Service OPNET Model

In this paper, we describe a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) OPNET simulation model and the implementation of the Radio Link Control/Medium Access Control (RLC/MAC) and the Base Station Subsystem GPRS protocol (BSSGP). The RLC/MAC and BSSGP protocols are added to an existing GPRS OPNET model. We have enhanced the existing model by implementing unacknowledged mode of RLC and two phase access...

Performance Simulation for the General Packet Radio Service, GPRS

Within the next year the first GPRS wireless packet data networks will be operable in Europe. In this paper, we study the capacity of the GPRS air interface under various conditions. For the analysis of the underlying Radio Link Control (RLC) protocol and the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer a simulative approach using OPNET is applied. Performance results for the RLC/MAC protocol are given fo...

Service Disciplines Performance for Best-Effort Policies in Packet-Switching Wireless Cellular Networks

In this paper, we investigate the performance of service disciplines for packet-switched wireless networks in the context of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). The GPRS is a new additional GSM service, which provide packet switched data services over GSM network and a packet access to data networks. Using either best effort service or guaranteed performance service, the service discipline aff...
